The Bucket List: Procure Dan Jenkins Bobblehead Doll. Check.

p1030242Toward the end of the day some of the pixel-stained wretches in the press tent got a nice treat: an appearance by Dan Jenkins, dean of American golf writers. Hosted by Golf Digest EIC Jerry Tarde and USGA Executive Director David Fay, the occasion was to toast the great man on the eve of his 200th major championship. This really is a shocking number, two hundred. Fay compared the achievement to Byron Nelson’s eleven straight Tour wins in 1945, though as a feat of longevity I consider it more Ripkenesque. Either way, it’s a tally that’s not likely to be matched for a very long time.

“First I hit it in the left rough on one…” Jenkins began, drawing laughs from the audience as he launched into a barrage of his inimitable one-liners. Out on the course earlier in the day, Links editor Hunki Yun suggested that the Texan’s quick-hitting style was perfect for Twitter, and indeed, Jenkins is a newly-minted star of social media.

After a quick Q&A, the author stayed on hand to sign copies of the recently-released Jenkins at the Majors (Doubleday), a highlight reel of his championship coverage spanning six decades. The scribes also collected bobblehead dolls in his likeness. I’m quite confident that no souvenir I will obtain at the 2009 United States Open will match this object’s potential for scaring the shit out of my future grandchildren.

But as Jerry Tarde pointed out, golf writers in the Hall of Fame are few and far between–there’s Darwin, there’s Wind, and someday there will be Jenkins. So congratulations to Dan on an amazing, colorful career–one that’s still going strong after all these years.

Bottom: A rare souvenir. Do not look for it on eBay, you’ll only be disappointed.
