SI GolfNation: "Say, Chad, this Virtual Grey Goose Tastes Just Like the Real Thing!"

Interesting item in Street & Smith’s Sports Business Journal today: Eric Fisher reports that Sports Illustrated and Golf.com will be launching a new Facebook/iPhone platform called “SI GolfNation”. Several of the features–things like personal stat-tracking, tee-time booking, and course and equipment reviews–are not exactly earth-shaking innovations. But it seems the success of the thing will depend less on the toys offered and more on the cross-platform experience itself, as members of the hypothetical regular Saturday fourball at Dubsdread can now trash-talk each other and compare their respective sand save percentages more creatively, from more places. All while Golf.com’s editorial content nicely hangs out on the interface for users to read and discuss–that is, when they’re not busy pouring each other “Virtual Grey Goose” cocktails.

This last bit is just beyond ridiculous, of course, and it’s hard to see golfers responding to a targeted take on what is easily the dumbest aspect of Facebook, but if widgets like this keep the magazine’s editorial staff paid in full, I have to endorse it. And it begs the question: Which spirit would you like to see get “deep integration” here on Out and Back? Here are a few possible targets for such a campaign:
