Chambers Bay Preview (Video)

Ryan Herrington previews the U.S. Amateur for His post also includes a two-minute video I shot and edited while I was in Tacoma working on a feature on Chambers Bay for the Aug. 9 issue of Golf World (print-only, but I’ll provide a link if one appears). In the video I focus on the ability of the course to play very differently from day to day, because of the flexibility of the design. This flexibility has USGA set-up expert Mike Davis excited to play-test various concepts with an eye toward the 2015 U.S. Open. Link here to video.

Of the five players Herrington tips to go deep into match play, I especially like Oklahoma State’s Peter Uihlein, who showed both a methodical mind and superb talent last year at Southern Hills. My sleeper pick, though, would be 2009 GB&I Walker Cupper Eamonn “Stiggy” Hodgson. While not the most talented player at Merion (that would’ve been Rickie Fowler, natch), the phrase “competitive fire” doesn’t even begin to describe this guy. Players experienced in the vicissitudes of links golf will have an advantage at Chambers Bay, in general. If Stiggy makes it to match play, watch out.
